METRIC Lighting Services was founded in 2025 by Josh Bell. Initially started to provide lighting controls commissioning engineers to the South West, the business has grown into a suite of services offering objective technical consultancy into project lighting.
Our mission is simple - to support your project with objective technical expertise. We are not affiliated with any brand and we do not supply any products so you can feel secure knowing that our advice is based on the what's best for your project, not what is best for METRIC.

Josh has been working in technical lighting roles professionally since 2015. His interest in lighting started in school, where he slowly transitioned from a musician on stage to a technician off stage. Going on to study Technical Theatre at New College, Telford he then moved into higher education, attaining a First Class Degree with Honours in Lighting Design & Technology at the University of South Wales.
Professionally, Josh started work as a technical lighting designer on high-end residential and super yacht projects in one of the countries best home integrators. This role was centred on lighting control infrastructure design, and he quickly developed into a key member of a team focussing on 'special projects'. This largely consisted of custom integrations and private nightclubs which is where Josh got his first experiences of commissioning live projects. He finished his time here in a senior role, overseeing the design of projects and coordinating with the wider project teams.
Following a move to Bristol, Josh moved into the world of commercial lighting. This is where he was first exposed to the more commercial nuances of projects, 3D modelling software and standard compliance. Josh's prior experience of controls led him into a particular expertise in lighting controls for commercial spaces, developing solutions that would be integrated into the business offering. At the same time, Josh was developing a CPD program to provide further education to the local construction community, with a firmly held belief that lighting is undervalued and misunderstood in large parts of construction. In Josh's final roles before starting METRIC, providing technical expertise and design to some of Bristol's biggest projects.
All of Josh's work is based on his ethos that:
1) Lighting is misunderstood - the goal is not simply to illuminate but to bring a space to life
2) Lighting is a science - it is more than a green tick in a dialux report. It requires specialist knowledge and application.
3) Lighting controls are only as good as the user experience
